Garden Centres Sell Illegal Opium Seeds

Updated : Mar 14, 2009

Hundreds of Irish garden centres are unintentionally breaking the law by selling illegal opium poppies.

The poppy seeds, which are the sole source of the world’s opium, morphine and heroin, are being openly sold in garden centres across the country. Innocent gardeners are unaware they are illegally cultivating the source of opium which are occasionally targeted by junkies in desperate need of a fix.

Known as ‘bread poppies’, the seeds are illegal to cultivate under the 1979 Misuse of Drugs Act. However, no warning is given with the seeds when purchased as it seems the garden centres selling them are not aware they are illegal either.

VeryHappyPig says oops, the garden centres might want to take these poppies off their shelves now!!
