Galway Plan A Fundraiser For Over 500 Athletes

Updated : Feb 25, 2009

The Special Olympics Ireland organisation has issued an appeal to the people of Galway to donate or get involved in any fundraising event to support Special Olympics in their own town and community.
The fundraising plan, which will run until May, should raise €5 million nationally this year. The Galway launch took place in the Marriott Hotel where people were asked to get involved as the money raised locally will be going towards training Galway athletes.

There are over 1,600 people with an intellectual disability in the Galway area, but only 40% of them are athletes in Special Olympics Ireland, and Special Olympics Ireland says money raised will go towards providing sports training and competition for those athletes and to reach out to those people in Galway not already involved.

The money will also be used to recruit and train volunteers and to develop new clubs throughout Galway City and County. Special Olympics Ireland changes the lives of thousands of athletes and their families, every day in communities throughout Ireland

VeryHappyPig says this is another community pulling together to help people and they’re going to do a damn good job of it! Thanks to GalwayNews for this story.
