Dublin Zoo Name Baby Giraffe
Updated : Feb 19, 2009
Dublin Zoo have announced a prosperous name for its newest 2 metre tall arrival.
The female giraffe calf, who was born on 4 January, has been named 'Neema', which means 'prosperous' in Swahili. Following a nationwide competition to name the giraffe, six-year-old Swords girl Lucy Blacker was selected as the lucky winner.
Helen Clarke, team leader at the Zoo's African Plains area, said the name is appropriate given Neema's first weeks in the world: “She is doing really well since birth and is quite genuinely prospering!'“
Newly-named Neema is already 2 metres tall and weighs a robust 50kg.
