Dog Is A Class Act For Autistic Kids

Updated : Feb 8, 2009

Setanta, a shaggy Scottish deerhound, has become a huge hit with the autistic children at a school in Sallins, Co. Kildare. The dog is even helping them learn to read!!

Boys with autism and learning difficulties at the Sallins National School are being visited by Setanta twice a week where they read to him. He is also helping them build confidence and social skills too.

Resource teacher Denise Chambers, who runs the classes, rescued Setanta when he was dumped at an animal shelter three years ago. He has now become important teaching tool and looks forward to his classes with the boys.

Denise said: “He loves all the attention. He actually knows now which days he’s coming with me to school and he gets all excited”.

VeryHappyPig says ahhhh, how sweet! Pigs are great with kids too, if any are interested in reading to me!!
