Blind Irishman Reaches South Pole

Updated : Jan 28, 2009

Mark Pollock, from Co. Down, has become the first blind person to conquer the South Pole.

Mrk and his team-mates Simon O'Donnell and Inge Solheim trekked to the South Pole unaided by dog teams or skidoos and travelling on foot for an average of 14 hours a day pulling 90kg sleds, for a total of 770km over 22 days, in temperatures as low as -50 degrees as part of The South Pole Race.

While he was not the first blind person to try to reach the South Pole, Mark is the first one to be successful. The mission also marked the tenth anniversary of him losing his sight.

Prior to competing in the race, it was thought Mark's only advantage as a blind man in the event, was that he would be less likely to suffer polar shock, a psychological phenomenon which affects some who cannot deal with the nothingness.

VeryHappyPig thinks Mark is one hell of a man!! You've done us proud, lad.... The Irish never give up!!
