Hundreds of thousands of people are travelling to Washington DC today for the inauguration of Barack Obama as the first black US President.
On the eve of his inauguration, Barack Obama called for Americans to come together for the common good and urged people to dedicate themselves to public service.
Just before 5pm Irish time today Barack Hussein Obama will place his hand on a small bible once used by Abraham Lincoln and will be sworn in as the country's 44th President.
Amid the tightest security ever seen in the capital, authorities are expecting up to four million people to witness the event in person.
