Old To New But Still Old..Artistic touch to Mill House estate

Updated : Sep 15, 2009

Set on about 63.5 acres, the Mill House is a spectacular riverside estate set on the banks of the river Slaney.

Located close to the borders of Carlow and Wexford, famous artist & illustrator Mark O’Neill decided this would be the perfect place to call home. The Mill House dates back to the 18th century and with the help of interior designer Maria Fenlon’s skills, Mark completely re-styled the property.

The scheme follows a simple modern style and this beautifully reflects the old rough stone, whitewashed walls and the natural timbers in the cottage. Mark would be considered one of Irelands fastest selling exhibition artists and at the top of most art collector’s lists. In a lot of Marks paintings he likes to use a particular shade of white, which he wanted to express in this new interior.

Máise had this particular white colour created especially for Mark for his kitchen. The stunning views of the river and Mill at the side of the cottage can be seen again reflected in the gloss kitchen doors from different positions in the room.

Using LG High Mac material, nice thick square edged worktops are detailed to wrap around all the window sills, and the hob & sinks are beautifully flush mounted. A key feature to LG is there are no visible joints in the different slabs, so it looks like one continuous piece through out.

The ‘in-line’ gas hob design used on the island worked very well in ensuring there was ample space for the breakfast bar on the other side. In a tighter space like this an in line hob is half the depth of a normal model. Having all four gas rings in one line is also easier and safer to cook with. The overall result is an inspiring place for Mark to cook, work, entertain and relax.
