Councillors Pay There Own Way Tp Gerrmany

Updated : Sep 2, 2009

Dublin councillors who visited Germany recently paid their own way.

The South Dublin County Council representatives went on a one-day visit to a geo-thermal energy plant near Munich.

Councillors Guss O'Connell, from Lucan, and Clondalkin members Tony Delaney (FG), Therese Ridge (FG) and Robert Dowds (Lab) were accompanied on the trip by Sandymark Construction's Con McCarthy.

Sandymark was involved in a rezoning plan for 5,000 homes on agricultural land between Rathcoole and Newcastle, which was turned down in 2007.

Sandymark had sought to provide heating to the planned homes using energy harnessed from within the earth.

Cllr O'Connell said the purpose of the trip was to see first hand what is involved.

He said: "I paid for myself. That was the understanding under which I went to begin with.

"You can't expect the taxpayer to be paying for these types of trips. I've always only gone to conferences that were useful and that were part of what I was involved in at that time on the council."
