Jack And Eva Most Popular Babies Names

The list of the most popular Irish baby names for 2008 has been revealed, with Jack topping the list for boys and Ava coming first for girls.

New figures published today by the Central Statistics Office also reveal Sean, Conor, Daniel and James came next for boys whilst Katie, Sarah, Emma and Emily made up the top five for girls.

The number of births in the country is up by over 400 on 2007 figures.

The average age of mothers for births registered in 2008 was 31.

The number of births registered outside marriage in 2008 was at almost 6,000 and this accounted for 33% of all babies born.

In 2008, 6,424 deaths were registered, 70 of those were infant deaths.

The number of marriages registered during the last quarter of 2008 was just under 5,000, which is slightly under the figures for the same period on 2007.
