Updated : Aug 19, 2009
A photograph of a horse and rider galloping across a beach under the Mourne Mountains was yesterday unveiled as the winning entry in a contest to capture the spirit of Ireland.
Ryan Wilson’s dramatic black and white shot of Tyrella beach in his native Co Down was selected from thousands of images in the GoIreland.com photography awards according to the Herald.
The competition pits Irish and visiting tourists from around the world against each other to best capture the wonders of Ireland.
Mr Wilson’s entry, entitled ‘Into the West’, was taken against the stunning backdrop of the Mourne Mountains sweeping down to the sea.
The silhouetted horse and rider gallop along the shoreline under heavy clouds with the sun bursting through – which judges described as typically Irish.
Dick Spring, chairman of Gulliver Ireland, which runs the competition along with postcard company John Hinde, said the competition entries are significant because they show what tourists think is attractive about Ireland.
“These awards help identify those aspects of Ireland that keeps Ireland to the fore in tourists’ minds,†he said.
More than half of the thousands of photographs submitted came from overseas visitors, with runners-up coming from Belgium, Holland, Spain, the UK and Germany.
The winning entry along with the 11 runners-up, including |images of Connemara Park, Glendalough, Achill Island, Ballycotton Bay, Burren National Park and Malin Head, will be printed in a John Hinde calendar
