Baby Born Safe And Well In A Garage!

Updated : Aug 18, 2009

A baby girl was born safe and well after a surprise early appearance at an Esso station.

Andrea and Sean Moran, from Highfield, Carlow, were on their way to the Coombe for the birth of their baby, last Sunday, when they were forced to make the emergency stop.

Andrea's labour pains had got so strong the couple were forced to pull into Behans petrol station in Castledermot, Co Kildare, and call for help.

Andrea said: "When we pulled into the Esso station, Sean was calling for someone local to see if there were doctors around."

However, the only passers-by were Kilkenny and Waterford hurling supporters on their way to Croke Park for the All-Ireland semi-final, and Andrea and Sean had to deliver 8lb Sophie themselves the Herald reports.

The calm couple, who have been married for six years, worked quickly in their Toyota Avensis, while waiting for the ambulance to bring Sophie, who is now the picture of health, to the Coombe.

"I lifted her [Sophie] down when she came out and Sean unravelled her. Sean's fairly calm-going, but he got a shock when he saw the cord wrapped around her neck -- but he didn't actually tell me.

"I was on a high, but he was worried and he asked the doctors when he got to the Coombe if there was anything to be worried about."

The new mum is still in shock at the brevity of her labour, and she joked many mums might think she had "an easy one".

She said: "It was exceptionally quick. I had a few cramps but nothing major. It's scary for a baby to come that quick.

"At 9.07am, Sean rang the ambulance -- and by 9.18am I was talking to my mother on the mobile with the baby in my arms in the car outside the Esso station in Castledermot."

Little Sophie had to have blood tests when she arrived in hospital as she was born in an unsterile environment, but she was given the all-clear.

Andrea said: "She's peaceful now, it was an easy birth. She's like a baby who was born by caesarean, she's very calm.

"All the pain was gone once she was out and crying. I was instantly relieved, I didn't care once she was all right."
