President Congratulates New Irish Hero

Updated : Aug 17, 2009

President McAleese has extended her congratulations to Irish race-walker Olive Loughnane, who won a silver medal at the World Athletic Championships in Berlin yesterday.

Loughnane, 33, finished 49 seconds behind Olga Kaniskine of Russia in 1 hour, 28 minutes and 58 seconds.

President McAleese said: 'It takes immense talent, dedication and courage to win a silver medal at such a prestigious event. This is such a proud moment for Olive, her family, teammates and friends - and one in which all of us can share.'

Ireland team manager Patsy McGonagle also paid tribute to Loughnane's performance.

He said: 'She had a brilliant race and this is a fantastic performance by Olive. She always looked in control and tactically she got it right so we are all delighted for her and lets hope we can get some more performances like that over the rest of the Championships.'
