Tea Is Proved A Great Destresser

Updated : Aug 14, 2009

The traditional solution to any crisis is putting the kettle on and it seems the age old problem solver has won the backing of scientists.

Researchers proved what generations already believed by concluding that drinking tea in times of stress had a "significantly" calming effect reports the Evening Herald.

Tests, led by psychologist Dr Malcolm Cross at City University London, showed that even a single cup of tea can significantly reduce anxiety.

He said: "This study shows that the social aspects of tea enhance its effects on our bodies and brains."

Experiments on volunteers in a stressful scenario showed a 25pc increase in anxiety for those who did not receive tea immediately after the stress-inducing test.

Those who were given tea actually demonstrated a 4pc reduction in stress.

Matt Owen, spokesman for Direct Line which commissioned the research, said: "Putting the kettle on to help solve a problem is something that pervades soap opera, film and literature alike.

"The research shows that it's during 'everyday' crises that people turn to tea."

A tough day at work and office politics were the most common daily dilemmas solved by tea. It takes Britons just 1.6 cups of tea with milk and 1.5 sugars to completely regain their cool.
