3m Donation By Kind Sir
Updated : Aug 10, 2009
A kind-hearted parishioner has dug deep to make a donation believed to be between €2m and €3m towards a new parish centre development in Malahide.
It has emerged that a planning application has been lodged for the €7.5m scheme at St Sylvester's Church, Malahide in north county Dublin.
The development is being planned for a site adjacent to the church, and was supported by a seven-figure donation from a wealthy parishioner.
Money has also been collected through parish fundraising efforts and other donations from across the parish and beyond.
The new centre will be built in the grounds beside the existing main church building.
The facilities will include four meeting rooms, a cafe, priests' offices, a library, a religious goods shop, a resource centre, cloistered garden and an underground car park.
And the estimated €7.5m price tag will also include the extensive renovation and refurbishment of the church itself.
Under the plans, the church will have a new sacristy, a mortuary chapel, landscaping of the church grounds and three duplex apartments to accommodate the priests of the parish.
Subject to planning permission being granted, there are hopes that the new parish centre could open next year.
The new building will provide young people in the area with a place to gather.
There are a sizeable number of clubs, associations and societies in Malahide and the centre and will allow the church to provide badly-needed facilities for community organisations, especially at a time when cutbacks are preventing community building projects from progressing.
As the town has grown, so has the number and variety of sporting, social and leisure activities, each backed up by strong organisational structures.
