Ikea To Provide More Jobs

Updated : Aug 10, 2009

IKEA is to employ a further 100 people in temporary posts to help meet high demand at their new north Dublin store.

The Swedish retail giant said the jobs would run for at least the next two months.

More than 15,000 people a day are visiting the store in Ballymun, which opened last month.

Some 168,374 customers have gone through the store in just 11 days, averaging at 15,306 a day.

Last Saturday some 17,573 people chose to spend the day in retail therapy. Over the bank holiday weekend, the store was forced to turn customers away such was the turnout.

At 31,500sq m -- the size of five-and-a-half football pitches -- it is the biggest shopping outlet in the country.

"Every day we have about 2,800 people in the store at any one time," Mr Deakin said. "Each day the average spend per customer is getting higher and higher.

"We expected annual sales at the height of the Celtic Tiger boom to be €125-€127m annually. We revised them to €100-€105m now.

"But this [number of shoppers] is what we would have expected if we had opened three-and-a-half years ago."

He said Irish customers are also spending longer in the store, but conceded this could be attributed to the novelty factor of the store. The average time spent in the Dublin store is two hours and 20 minutes, compared with one hour and 48 minutes in other stores.

Some 500 people are currently employed at the store.
