Electricity Prices Could Follow Gas Prices And Drop

Updated : Aug 6, 2009

Pressure increased today for a cut in electricity prices following a warm welcome for plans to cut home gas prices by almost 10pc.

Business leaders said the move to reduce gas bills was welcome but ESB bill cuts were now needed to restore competitiveness.

An ESB spokesman said the public would get "an indication of the timing of any future price cuts" for electricity at a public forum organised by the Commission for Energy Regulation (CER) next Monday.

Bord Gais is seeking permission from the commission to reduce the price of gas to householders by 9.3pc and to drop gas prices to medium and small businesses by 13.6pc from October 1. The projected price drops follow significant falls in the price of gas on international markets.

Consumer Association spokesman Dermot Jewell declared the price drops were "excellent news" and "just what the people need".

"When you consider the phenomenal increases we took on board in recent years, this is long overdue," he said.
