Missing Man Found By Heat Seeking Device

Updated : Aug 4, 2009

An elderly man who went missing from his home overnight was found safe and well thanks to the Coastgaurds helicopter and its heat seeker.

The 88-year-old, who suffers from Alzheimer's, was last seen at his home near Moycullen, Co Galway, on Sunday afternoon. The alarm was raised by his family at 5pm.

A major search involving gardai, members of Galway Mountain Rescue and local people was launched and continued through the night.

The Irish Coastguard helicopter was tasked from Shannon yesterday morning and within a short time had located the missing man in a bog at Tullaghnanon, about 7km west of Moycullen.

A heat-seeking device on board the helicopter picked up the man's movement's and pinpointed his exact location shortly after 10am.

He was airlifted to University Hospital Galway where his condition yesterday was described as 'comfortable'.

Gardai believe that the combination of a mild night and the fact that the man kept walking for the time he was missing helped him to survive.
