Lotto Luck For Honest Shop Keeper

Updated : Jul 29, 2009

The owner of a €350,000 missing lottery ticket has rewarded the honest shopkeeper who tracked him down -- with a "four-figure" cut of his winnings.

Since collecting his prize, lucky Dermot Finglas has given the cash to Tom Heavey as a thank-you gift for his good deed.

Mr Heavey, who runs the Centra store where the winning ticket was found last month, said he was pleased with Mr Finglas's "gesture".

The winner, who is believed to be still holidaying in celebration, absent-mindedly left the winning ticket behind at the shop at Hardman's Gardens in Drogheda.

The 35-year-old unemployed DJ nearly missed out on his slice of luck when he left the Quick Pick on the shop counter. But Mr Heavey, with his boss John Walsh, checked the CCTV footage, then released the images of the mystery buyer. This helped identify Mr Finglas.

Collecting his cheque at the National Lottery Headquarters afterwards, Mr Finglas said the shopkeeper's honesty was the "real story" of his good fortune. This week, Mr Heavey confirmed that Mr Finglas had given him a cash gift. "He did look after me, but I don't want to say how much", he told the Herald.

"It was a four-figure sum, and I'm happy with it. He just said, there you are and that was it. He did make the gesture."

VeryHappyPig now reckons its rewarding to be honest!
