17 New Ideas To Bring Ireland Out Of The Big Bad R-Thats More Like IT Be Positive

Updated : Jul 22, 2009

The unemployed will be offered places on a volunteer corps as part of 17 new ideas to drive Ireland out of recession, it was revealed today.

The Government has adopted schemes suggested by the public through the Ideas Campaign with several focussed on supporting people on the dole.

Among the initiatives those out-of-work can join the corps and give up their time at home and abroad without losing benefits.

Other schemes will allow the newly unemployed to join education courses while at the other end of the scale PhD students will be offered special business skills.

A new roll-over policy for public funds is also being implemented ensuring agencies do not adopt a wasteful ’use it or lose it’ approach.

Junior minister Conor Lenihan announced the Government’s decision and said the Cabinet had been impressed by the quality of suggestions.

“Many of the other ideas warrant further analysis and attention,” he said.

“The campaign places strong emphasis on community involvement and initiative and this is an aspect which the Government very much welcomes.”

“Many of the other ideas warrant further analysis and attention,” he said.

“The campaign places strong emphasis on community involvement and initiative and this is an aspect which the Government very much welcomes.”

Almost 5,300 suggestions were submitted to the Ideas Campaign founded by former journalist Aileen O’Toole. Set up in March it published an action plan in May with 44 specific ideas which were handed to a committee of business leaders selected by the Government.

Mr Lenihan said he was committed to the initiative and would continue to invite more suggestions.

Other ideas being adopted include,

* Making exercise space and outdoor equipment for old and young people available to facilitate healthy living and social interaction.

* Position Ireland as a green food island producing premium, natural foods.

* Encourage schools to organise transition year trips within the country to help tourism.

* Encourage voluntary early retirement in the public sector.

* Facilitate career breaks and shorter working week for civil and public servants.

* Take measures to allow the use of lower-cost generic drugs.

* Get maximum value from the public sector property portfolio by utilising vacant space and buying not renting.

Ms O’Toole said: “It is encouraging that the Government has responded so positively and so comprehensively to the ideas submitted by Irish citizens.

“The implementation of these ideas will have a positive impact on Ireland, both economically and socially.

“It is also encouraging to see that other parties are taking action on foot of the Ideas Campaign. The Action Plan was not intended solely for Government to implement but also for business and voluntary organisations, as well as individuals.”
