Irish Cancer Society Give One Million To Governement For Screening Programme
Updated : Jul 21, 2009
The Irish Cancer Society is offering the Government €1m to help pay for the establishment of a bowel cancer screening programme.
The society says it would rather it did not have to make the offer, but feels that nothing will be done to tackle the disease unless it provides some of the funding.
It says it has made the offer in the hope of getting a screening programme established despite the difficult economic climate.
Ireland has the highest mortality rate for bowel cancer in western Europe, with more than 900 people dying from the disease every year.
