Swine Flu Treatment Availble In Ireland

Drugs used to treat the symptoms of swine flu will be available on prescription from pharmacies across the country from today.

Up until now, the health authorities have been giving Tamiflu to people who test positive for the virus and those who have had close contact with them.

However, the approach to treating the swine flu outbreak has changed this week, with the emphasis shifting from containment to treatment.

GPs will be able to prescribe Tamiflu to people with symptoms of the virus.

Earlier this week, the Department of Health's chief medical officer said up to one million Irish people could contract the illness.
