Ireland's MEP Take Their Seats!

Updated : Jul 14, 2009

Ireland's 12 MEPs are due to take their seats in the new European Parliament today.

Four new Irish MEPs were elected last month - Joe Higgins in Dublin, Nessa Childers in the East constituency and Alan Kelly and Sean Kelly in the South constituency.

Pat 'the Cope' Gallagher, who previously served in the parliament from 1994 to 2002, was also elected again in the North West constituency.

Seven outgoing MEPs were re-elected - Brian Crowley, Mairead McGuinness, Liam Aylward, Gay Mitchell, Pronsias de Rossa, Marian Harkin and Jim Higgins.

One of the main items of business on today's Strasbourg session is the election of a new president and vice-president for the parliament.
