Maternity Hospital Major Expansion

Updated : Jul 13, 2009

An overcrowded maternity hospital has been granted permission for a major expansion.

The National Maternity Hospital at Holles Street in Dublin 2 was given permission by Dublin City Council for a six-storey extension next to the existing unit.

Despite some opposition, hospital chiefs argued the new building was vital for providing for its patients.

The top level would not be a public area, leaving five storeys open to patients, visitors and staff.

The ground floor will have an emergency entrance, a cafe extension and two shops.

Four treatment rooms and one clinical room will be located on the first floor, while the second floor would have a therapeutic garden.

The second floor will also house a six-bed ward, a six-bed day unit, a single bedroom and three treatment rooms as well as other facilities.

Three operating theatres and an anaesthetic room will be located on the third floor, while the fourth floor will be given over to 22 cots, three of these being isolation cots.

The application states: "The use of the new extension will be mainly clinical to relieve the existing hospital services."

A hospital spokesperson told the Herald Newspaper recently it was expecting at least 9,000 deliveries this year.

The hospital reported the increasing birth rate "is placing additional pressures on the hospital in terms of its workload and infrastructure".
