On Yer Bike From September 13
Updated : Jul 9, 2009
Dublin City Council has set September 13 as the date for the launch of the public bicycle scheme.
The local authority's cycle forum chairman Cllr Andrew Montague said bikes will be in use from that date.
Some 450 bicycles will be cycled from City Hall on Dame Street to 40 stations around the capital.
Mr Montague hopes the security issues the council took into consideration during the planning phase will mean the bikes are not damaged.
"We made sure the stations are overlooking busy areas, not down side lanes. We did spend a lot of time thinking about it. In Paris [where a similar scheme operates], they really rushed it -- they put a lot of the stations in back streets," he said.
The 'bicycles for billboards' deal has seen 167 parking spaces lost to make way for the scheme.
In return for providing and maintaining 450 bicycles at 40 sites for 15 years, JC Decaux has been allowed to erect 120 advertising billboards across the city.
