Dublin No Longer In Worlds Most Expensive Top 20
Updated : Jul 8, 2009
Dublin has dropped out of the top 20 list of the world's most expensive cities in which to live.
In recent years the capital lingered in the mid to high teens and, at one stage, was even on a par with New York when it came cost of living. However, with the recent much over hyped R word hitting town Dublin has fallen down the expense ladder
In the latest cost of living survey, compiled by consultancy firm Mercer, Dublin was ranked as the 25th most expensive city in the world, down nine places from a year ago. The fall is being attributed to a decline in rents and food prices, coupled with a fall in the value of the euro against the dollar.
Top of the heap was Tokyo, which knocked Moscow off the number one spot and down to third due to a strengthening yen.
The survey covers 143 cities and compares the cost of more than 200 items, from housing and transport to clothing, food, household goods and entertainment. The data is compiled to help multinational companies work out the costs for expatriate employees around the world.
It found that renting a luxury two-bed apartment in Dublin cost €1,300 compared to €2,700 in London and €3,355 in New York. In Tokyo, a similar property costs an eye-watering €4,227 a month.
Meanwhile, a cup of coffee in Dublin would set you back €3, compared to €4.60 in a cafe in Paris.
