Two Year Old Girl Thanks Super Rescue Hero

Updated : Jul 3, 2009

A two year old little girl yesterday thanked rescuers who plucked her from freak floods with a bunch of flowers from her mother's shop.

Just two weeks ago, water almost submerged the florist's in Gweedore, Co Donegal.

Evelyn McBride and daughter Jean were rescued from the first-floor window by the Irish coastguard after the Coteen river burst its banks and engulfed the premises.

But yesterday Ms McBride was back in business and Jean was saying "thank you" with flowers. Met Eireann said the Donegal downpour was a once-in-a-century occurrence according to the Independent.

The floods reached a height of six metres and destroyed the stock and fixtures and fittings in the shop, which opened three years ago.

But thanks to the valiant efforts of a team of neighbours, led by Evelyn's father Kevin Doherty, the shop has been fully refitted.

"We're open for business again but I sincerely hope that's the last flood we'll see around here in my lifetime," she said.

"It took just 17 minutes for the water to rise so quickly. We've had enough for one century."

Head of Bunbeg Coastguard Timmy Boyle said: "We are just delighted we could help in this emergency.

"It is what we are trained for. It was a great team effort."

Joe Curran, who climbed on to a high shop ledge to save the mother and daughter, said they would have been swept under the nearby bridge if they had fallen into the water.
