The national athletics stadium in north Dublin is to get a €400,000 upgrade as a track with be on one of the best surfaces in Europe will be put in place.
Fingal County Council (FCC) is seeking a highly qualified contractor to carry out the work, which will take around five weeks to complete and will more jobs for VHPs Jobs Bin.
The Santry track is the centre for athletics events in Ireland and home to the success Clonliffe Harriers club.
Director of Community Services with FCC, Sean Turnbull, told the Herald that the upgrade was necessary because the old surface had exceeded its lifespan.
Outlining the importance of the stadium, Mr Turnbull said: "We have been anxious to do it for a year or two. The synthetic tracks have a lifespan of around 10 years."
He noted that the current track had been in-situ for 12 years.
The grant money supplied by the Department of Sport is also to be used to repair an indoor warm up/sprint track in the stadium.
The work can't be done in winter as the specialised surface needs to laid at a warm temperature to ensure that it bonds properly.
