An investment of €91m has been announced at the Boston Scientific plant in Galway city.
The initiative will lead to the immediate creation of 45 jobs at the medical devices company.
Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade & Employment Mary Coughlan said a project of such global strategic importance to Boston Scientific would help attract further international direct investment into Ireland.

'This investment by BSC, a renowned global corporation and a reference life science company in Ireland, is an enormous boost of confidence in Ireland's RD&I abilities,' she added.
'It elevates this country to an elite position among world locations which have the capability to support next generation research and innovation.'
Earlier this year, the company announced that its Donegal facility would close in 2010 with manufacturing moving to Galway.
Boston Scientific Senior Vice President Hank Kucheman highlighted the ongoing successful performance of the Galway plant.
He said the highly-educated and technically skilled workforce at Ballybrit was a key part of the decision to make further strategic investment there.
Mr Kucheman added: 'Our activities in Ireland strengthen our company globally by ensuring the continued highest levels of innovation, manufacturing and value creation for patients, physicians, employees and shareholders.'
There are currently 3,000 people working at Boston Scientific's Galway site.
