Family Affair-Entire Irish Family Travel To Help Child Soliders

Updated : Jun 19, 2009

VeryHappyPig has continually expresses its surprise and delight at how charitable Irish people are. We have highlighted how despite the Big Bad Banned R word, which let us stress again we think is over hyped and over publicised, Irish individuals continue give their time, money and expertise to charity.

It’s not just an individual or group that crossed our good news only radar today, however as we bring you news of generous and caring family.

On Saturday, July 25, the entire Carley family will fly out to Uganda as part of a Zest 4 Kidz team, a charity which helps displaced, abused and abandoned children.

Robert and Jean Carley from Raheny, Dublin, and their five children – Jonathan (22), Johanna (20), twins James and Deboragh (18), and Timothy (15) – have one month to get a total of €20,000 together so they can make the trip.

Robert (47), who is a motivational trainer, says the family will all be putting their heads together to run an “introduction to trauma counselling” course with four trained counsellors.

They will set up a vocational programme to try teach life and work skills to the youngsters, who will then learn a trade which will help them have better prospects in life.

“It’s the darkest depths I’ve seen humanity go to,” said Robert.

“It’s the saddest I’ve ever seen. The generals get girls from the ages of nine and up as their sex slaves.

“We’ll be talking to teens who have killed more than 100 people ... because if they don’t do it, and do it with gusto, they get beaten.

“One eight-year-old girl told the story about how she was told to kill her friend because she wouldn’t marry the camp colonel. When she said she didn’t want to, they killed her friend and butchered her [into] pieces.

“She kept the little finger of her friend in her pocket to [show] she cared, and she was almost beaten to death because she was found with the finger.”

Robert and his family are fully aware of the challenges they face over the two weeks in Uganda, including an array of diseases The Evening Herald reports.

“Obviously there’s malaria, yellow fever, hepatitis C and hepatitis A, and lots of rabid dogs over there.”

The Carleys will run two fun camps for 1,000 former child soldiers who never got a chance to play, as they were holding guns instead of footballs and dolls.

To pledge funds to the Carley family’s cause, log onto www.mycharity.ie/event/thecarleys/ or email info@zest4kidz.com for more details.

Donations, marked the Carley family, can also be sent to Zest 4 Kids, 21 The Court, Cruagh Manor, Stepaside, Dublin 18.

VeryHappyPig says lets hope more people following the Carly's unique summer holiday plans!
