Ministers Pensions To Be Cut

Updated : Jun 16, 2009

The Taoiseach is reportedly set to enforce a cut of 25% in the ministerial pensions of sitting TDs who have refused to give up the payments voluntarily.

At present, sitting members of the Oireachtas who previously served as Government ministers receive half of their ministerial pension entitlement, despite the fact that they still earn lucrative salaries as TDs and Senators.

A number of former ministers have already agreed to give up the controversial payments, including four former Labour ministers, Fine Gael leader Enda Kenny and Fianna Fáil's Mary O'Rourke.

However, reports this morning say a number of others, including at least four Fianna Fáil members and most former Fine Gael ministers, are refusing to give up the money.

Finance Minister Brian Lenihan had promised to completely scrap the payments in his emergency budget speech last April, but was forced to consult ex-ministers after advice from the Attorney General.

This morning's reports say the Taoiseach is now planning to impose a 25% cut and could do so as early as today.

VeryHappyPig thinks is brilliant news-but fears the politicians might start crying about the big bad over hyped gloom enducing R word!
