Bluebells For Bluebell--Inner City Garden To Be Launched

Updated : Jun 10, 2009

Children living in Dublin's inner city may soon be growing their community by growing flowers it was revealed this week.

Top horticulturalist Fiann O Nuallain has taken a number of youngsters under his wing to teach them about native plants in their own special city centre garden.

O Nuallain, a medal-winning garden designer, has launched the project to promote Irish flora in communities in the Liberties and the inner city area.

Fiann said: "The Bridgefoot Street flats were pulled down and there was a vacant space available, so with the help of the local Community Development Project, we turned it into a community garden.

"Horticulture is also about culture. It's a great vehicle for education, the children love being outdoors and planting. It gives them a look at their own history and each plant has an interesting story," he added.

In one of the gardens in the city centre, the group has helped to plan a 'calendar garden', with a tree to symbolise each month, while children from the Bru Youth Group have introduced plants which were used by the Fianna in their garden on St Agnes Road in Crumlin.

Fiann has also embarked on a 'Bluebells for Bluebell' project to reintroduce the flower to its namesake township.
