IFI To Expand

The Irish Film Institute is bucking the big VeryHappyPig banned R and beginning a major redevelopment of its landmark premises in Temple Bar.

The revamp, which certainly create jobs, will give the IFI a third cinema, equipped with digital projection technology, and new common area facilities. The move comes as cinema audiences are on the increase during the economic downturn.

Last January saw the highest recorded audiences in Irish cinemas with 1.7 million people going to the cinema.

And the trend has been rising with April's figures increasing by 22.7pc on last year, and May figures are also expected to rise.
IFI director Sarah Glennie said: "The IFI Cinema 3 means we will be placed to further increase our revenues on the back of an upturn in the economy in 2010.
