Irish Man Pedals Across Oz

Updated : May 29, 2009

Andy Kenny, from Cabra has cycled 4,300km across Australia to raise money for the children of Chernobyl.

Personal fitness trainer Kenny, who just five years ago tipped the scales at over 17 stone, spent 42 days cycling from Perth, on the west coast, to Sydney on the east.

The trip raised €8,000 -- but the 29-year-old hopes this amount will jump to €10,000 in the coming days. He also promised that every cent raised will go to the charity, and will not fund the trip which he has paid for himself.

Andy said: "The charity I did it for is called Burren Chernobyl -- they're a really small west of Ireland charity I got involved in two years ago.

"My older brother, Hugh, who is a carpenter, went to Belarus three times and told me of the squalor and medieval conditions people were living in. I'm a personal trainer, so my skills wouldn't be useful over there but could be for something else."

Last July, Andy, who operates his business from Ballsbridge, bought a bike and began training for his Australian quest.

He said: "The bike cost me about €2,000 and I crashed on my first day training. I broke my arm, fractured my wrist and had bad concussion."

Andy finally set out on his Australian bike adventure on April 5 the Herald reports.

He said: "It was really gruelling.

"It was so remote I didn't meet many people at all. The first three weeks were really hot and the last three weeks were very cold.

"There were a lot of strong head winds as well -- and I hurt my knee on the second day." But he still finished the trip within his personal 42-day deadline. Andy arrived at the Sydney Opera House on Saturday, May 16, where a group of friends gathered to greet him. He stayed in Sydney for a week before jetting back to Ireland.

People can still donate money to the cause by checking out Andy's website at www.pedalpowered.ie.
