Festival Starts In Galway
The fortnight-long Volvo Ocean Race Festival officially gets underway in Galway today.
The event was formally launched last night at a ceremony on the Galway Docks attended by several thousand spectators.
The organisers say it will be the biggest festival of its kind in Ireland and will be worth more than €40m to the local economy.
Over the next two weeks, Galway will host more than 100 free events before the yachts participating in the Volvo Ocean Race resume their round-the-world journey on June 5.
Pier Opened In Cork
A newly refurbished pier has opened at Baltimore and Skibbereen Harbour in Co Cork.
Transport Minister Noel Dempsey officially opened the €1m development this morning.
The changes aim to reduce traffic congestion and increase safe access to the pier.
Motorway Opened In Cork
A new stretch of motorway in Co Cork is due to officially open to traffic today.
The 16km stretch of dual carriageway between Fermoy and Mitchelstown has been completed nine months ahead of schedule
The road, which is part of the N8, will be officially opened by Transport Minister Noel Dempsey today.
