Ireland To Mongolia For Charity

Updated : May 22, 2009

Four Irish students are gearing up to drive from Ireland to Mongolia in a nine-year-old car to raise money for the Christina Noble Children's Foundation.

Edmund and PJ McMahon, from Kilmoon Cross in Ashbourne, will join James Doyle, from Lucan, and Colm Lauder, from Clontarf, in a 1.4l VW Polo Estate for the 10,000-mile Mongol Rally, navigating by "our wits and a compass".

Calling themselves the "Vagabonds Of The Eastern World" the quartet, who claim to know nothing about car mechanics, will drive through 13 countries in July, taking in the Kazak and Gobi deserts the Evening Herlad reports.

When they get to their destination in Ulaan Bataar they plan to visit the Christina Noble charity for abandoned children in the city.

Edmund said: "We have to raise a minimum of £1,000 but we hope to get a lot more."

Alan Lewis, of Lewis Motors off Dublin's Amiens Street, donated the car to help the charitable event. Since then they have been getting to grips with basic mechanics by "asking friends" for help.

He said: "GPS is frowned on, so we will depend on a few maps and a compass."

The team set up a website, www.vagabonds09.com, which details the trip and links to the Christina Noble charity. Donations can also be made at Kilmoon Cross, Ashbourne, Co Meath.
