Your Numbers Up-Police Work Defined By Math Formula

Updated : May 22, 2009

VeryHappyPig was never too good at maths and it seems the Nottinghamshire Police constable has taken the place of our old maths teacher and come with one more equation for VHP to scratch its head over!

The new formula, created by Nottinghamshire Police's chief constable, has been revealed as the way to ensure the public has faith in the police.

Far from being the work of a great mathematician or physicist, the equation CE + CI + CS + VC x C = PC has been formulated by Julia Hodson

She believes that by adding community engagement (CE) with how officers handle
critical incidents (CI), customer satisfaction (CS) and volume crime (VC), and then multiplying the sum by communication (C), officers are left with public confidence (PC).

In the latest addition of Nottinghamshire Police's internal magazine, Force Times, she writes: "This is no complicated formula but the key to how we can achieve real public confidence in the police. Engaging with communities has been the role of police officers since the days of Robert Peel.

"It is up to us to ensure people know what we stand for, the success we are having in making Nottinghamshire a safer place and that the force will be there for them when they need us."

The equation, according to Nottinghamshire Police Federation, represents a move away from target-driven policing and towards ensuring the public has confidence with the service it receives.
