Famine To Be Remembered

Updated : May 15, 2009

A minute's silence is due to be observed at all public events today in remembrance of those who died or suffered loss in the Great Famine.

This Sunday is the inaugural National Famine Memorial Day, with Skibbereen named as the official commemoration venue.

The Co Cork town was one of the areas worst affected by the famine.

Community Affairs Minister Eamon O Cuiv, who chairs the National Famine Commemoration Committee, says the event will be used to reflect on people who are still going hungry in the world today
