Irsh Builders To Build African Orphanage

Updated : May 14, 2009

A group of Irish builders are taking an unpaid holiday to build an orphanage in Africa.

In an extraordinary show of goodwill, the county Kildare trades men along with volunteers will provide a proper home for almost 100 slum children in Nairobi, Kenya.

Paddy O’Connor, founder of Tara Projects, said the response had been brilliant despite the tough times financially the Evening Herald reported.

“This year it’s really taking off and there are 32 lads going out this Saturday. We are building a very big place so we’ve five bricklayers going out, five carpenters, two electricians and two plumbers. It will take 15 days,” Paddy O’Connor explained.

All these lads had to raise €3000 to go out there and that gives them accommodation, meals, a minibus and still lives €1,800 for materials.”

Mr O’Connor, who visits Africa regularly, got the idea to build the orphanage after he visited it and saw the children, who were orphaned through HIV, living in extremely poor conditions.

“I met Mama Tuzma and she had 89 children and two rooms. I’d never seen anything like it, it was terrible. She has such a big heart but unfortunately you can only get so far with a big heart. Moving into this will give them a chance and that’s all a kid wants.”

This is the kind of feel good, spirit lifting, good news story that VeryHappyPig loves.
