Presidents Daughter Becomes Trinity Scholar

Updated : May 12, 2009

President Mary McAleese's daughter was one of 83 new Trinity College scholars unveiled at a major ceremony in the university today.

The title recognises high marks in a special exam, with the successful students given a college room free of charge and free tuition fees the Evening Herald reported.

Emma McAleese (26) is in her second year of a five-year dental science degree.

The ceremony, which was attended by the President and her husband Martin, a dentist, is one of the oldest at Trinity and marks the beginning of the annual Trinity Week.

Ms McAleese lives in Aras an Uachtarain with her parents, where her mother has been Head of State since 1997, and recently got engaged to her boyfriend Micheal O'Connell.

At the ceremony 21 new fellows and three honorary fellows, including historian and broadcaster Dr John Bowman, were also announced.
