Deaf Drama Back By Popular Demand

Updated : May 5, 2009

“…You will witness history through different eyes…and different ears…”

Spirit of Sign, Cork Deaf Drama Group are giving you another chance to see their extraordinary show Down through the yEars at the UCD Astra Hall, Belfield, Dublin 4. The play was a sell out success at the Granary Theatre (Cork) last year and Spirit of

Sign have since been bombarded with requests to stage the performance again at the same venue and for the first time ever the show comes to Dublin for a special one-night show only.

Down through the yEars is a breathless journey through time as the performers explore the meaning of what it means to be Deaf in a hearing centred society. From cave-dwellers to space-travellers, from medieval monks to the Nazi holocaust, the performance is both provoking and side splittingly funny.

Spirit of Sign, Cork Deaf Drama Group was established in September 2006 in order to create performance opportunities for Deaf people and to promote and explore Deaf issues. In the short few years since their birth, Spirit of Sign have established themselves as a creative force to be reckoned with. Working with some of Ireland’s most talented directors, (including Asylum’s Donal Gallagher) Spirit of Sign’s work has been consistently high quality. The group also manage to achieve the almost impossible task of making important statements in an engaging and highly entertaining way.

Past work from the drama group include a series of short films which featured on RTE’s Hands On and the drama Stuff that Happens When You’re Deaf which presented poignant and comic snapshots of life as a Deaf person.

Down the yEars will begin at 8pm in the UCD Astra Hall, Belfield, Dublin 4. Tickets cost €20 and includes admission to show and finger-food afterwards.
