A new honours system is reportedly set to be introduced to award outstanding contributions to society by Irish citizens.
Reports this morning say the move is being planned by the Office of Active Citizenship, which aims to have the system up and running within three years.
A small number of people would be selected for the awards each year through an independent process based on votes from the public.
The Office of Active Citizenship is also planning to introduce a new Leaving Cert subject on politics and society.
Medicine Return
A campaign to get people to hand over their unused or out of date medicines has seen 3.5 tonnes collected.
More than 260 bins of pharmaceuticals products were safely discarded as part of the free Dispose of United Medicines Properly campaign.
The project was organised by the HSE South and the community pharmacists in Cork and Kerry and the response to this year’s project was twice as large as in 2007.
Kids Cycle Classes
School children all across Ireland will be given safe cycling classes as part of a drive to get ten percent of commuters using bikes by 2020.
The pledge is included in the state’s first national cycling policy designed to meet the ambitious target.
Near on 3 million will be invested to upgrade Dublin cycle paths while a national bike week is planned for June.
“ I am determined we will have world class infrastructure by 2020,†Minister for Transport Noel Dempsey said.
