The Art Of Limerick

Updated : Apr 22, 2009

An art publication featuring the works of over 75 schoolchildren from different cultural backgrounds was officially launched in County Limerick today.

The Limerick City and County Integration Group have produced the book, entitled “Living in Limerick - Many Cultures, One Home”, which contains artistic interpretations of the theme of multiculturalism in 21st century Limerick. The children who have produced the artwork for the book come from countries across the globe including Iraq, Nigeria, Ireland, USA, Poland, Philippines, Ghana and Brazil.

According to Councillor John Gallahue, Cathaoirleach of Limerick County Council, “This publication not only celebrates the artistic and creative endeavours of its many young contributors, it also symbolises a hugely significant change that has occurred in Irish society in recent years. That change involves the coming together of people from different cultural backgrounds.”

He noted that the children who had contributed to the publication had demonstrated their understanding of and friendliness with each other regardless of their cultural background.

The Cathaoirleach added that the perception existed among some sections of society that the effect of now being a multicultural society was the continued weakening of an already weak Irish culture.

“This could not be further from the truth however”, Councillor Gallahue said, “By learning about different cultures we have all been helped to find out a little more about ourselves, our culture and our sense of Irishness. Long may cross community interaction of this nature continue”.

The book’s publication follows on from a successful schools competition held in conjunction with International Solidarity with Migrants Day in December 2008. Competition judges included Mayor of Limerick City Cllr. John Gilligan, Cathaoirleach of Limerick County Council Cllr. John Gallahue and Ryan Hakizimana, a Rwandan artist living in Limerick.

Copies of the finished publication have been distributed to each of the participants, Limerick City and County Librarians and the participating schools, which include Ballylanders N.S., Doon Convent N.S., Presentation School Sexton Street, Scoil Iosaf Newcastle West, St. Joseph’s Secondary School Abbeyfeale and St. Patrick’s Girls N.S.

Commenting on the publication, Mayor of Limerick City John Gilligan stated, “This excellent publication is a wonderful example of the type of work being undertaken locally to encourage greater interaction between different cultures. I especially wish to congratulate the children involved for the quality of their artistry.”

The Mayor expressed his delighted that as a nation, Ireland had recognised the importance of learning more about other cultures.

“Limerick and the wider region’s thriving ethnic community is a testament to changing attitudes in this country and the growing realisation among Irish people of the huge benefits, social and economic, of embracing different cultures,” he said.

Mayor Gilligan continued, “As a nation we must unite in these harsh economic times and continue to support one another. Projects such as that being launched today are important instruments in promoting solidarity in the community.”
