Dublin's Eco Teens Are New York Award Winners!

Updated : May 8, 2009

Two Dublin teenagers who set up a eco-friendly fashion and jewellery business will be honoured for their achievements at a ceremony in New York.

Michelle Coakley (17) and Jade Kearney (16), from St Dominic’s Secondary School Ballyfermot set up Mishy-K Jewellery and entered it in the 2009 Youth Entrepreneur awards.

And the pair, who made jewellery out of recycled charity shop material, beat off competition from Dublin, Limerick and Belfast to claim first prize.

The entrepreneurial Ballyfermot students, who took part in the National Foundation for Training Entrepreneurship education programme earlier this year, are now in America and will rewarded for their ingenuity and effort at a lavish ceremony in New York.

“The two factors that made the girls stand out in the view of the judging panel were their Paul O’Connellesque never give up attitude and the fact that despite being disadvantaged by all sorts of factors in the course of setting up this business they succeeded in selling almost €1500 worth of product,” Jack MacGowan from Dublin Airport Authrity and judge explained.

The girls, who created over 70 original jewellery designs, now hope to expand the business and investigate developing other accessories for both men and women.

Very Happy Pig has an earring, but it isn’t too fashionable. Actually it's just our farm number.
