Crane Used To Save Elephant And Bionic Bullfrog

Updated : Apr 3, 2009

The latest in transporting large livestock….. Use a crane!! This runaway elephant was craned to safety after running on to a main road.

The six-ton, 9ft tall bull was hit by a truck after fleeing his Hindu temple home, breaking his hind legs and back. A crowd gathered as the giant animal was lifted onto a lorry by crane and taken away for treatment in Kerala, India, where it is illegal to put down elephants. A vet said later: “The operation was a success.”

Meanwhile, a frog called Brullie is believed to be the first frog in the world to be fitted with an artificial leg. The giant bullfrog had his shattered lower leg bone replaced with an inch-long metal pole in a two hour operation in South Africa after being bitten by a dog.

Owner Anne Mearns, 62, of Johannesburg, a wildlife expert who writes teaching material for schools, believes the operation is the first time a frog has ever undergone surgery to replace a broken bone. She said: "It was a nervous few hours while we waited for him to come around after the op, but he's healing up now and hobbling about the garden. The x-rays suggest he'll be as good as new."

She added: “People think I'm mad to care so much about a frog but I couldn't bear to see him in so much pain.”

VeryHappyPig says animals should be helped, not put down….. especially pigs!!
