1,000 Possible Jobs For The Midlands And 10 For Kerry
Updated : Mar 23, 2009
UP to 1,000 jobs could be created in the Midlands if a multi-million euro redevelopment of a shopping centre gets the go-ahead.
A planning application will be lodged with Athlone Town Council in Co Westmeath for the new Athlone Retail Centre (ARC) next month. Promoters of the ARC have said the centre would bring 500 jobs during construction and more than 500 retail positions following its completion.
Mr Tom McNamara, who purchased the site before the property boom, said that with the drop in construction costs, he can now offer knock-down rents to prospective brands interested in being part of the retail outlet. The businessman has already gathered a list of retailers who are said to be interested in locating there.
Meanwhile, up to 10 jobs will be created in Tralee, following the arrival of major British retailer The Edinburgh Woollen Mill at the Co Kerry home and garden centre, Ballyseedy Home & Outdoor Living.
Speaking after the official opening of the new shop, Nathan McDonnell, of Ballyseedy Home & Outdoor Living, said: "The decision of The Edinburgh Woollen Mill to locate a store on our site is a major vote of confidence in the existing retailers and, most importantly, our customers."
